The practice

Twenty minutes. Five steps. That is the whole thing.

  1. Don't pick a destination. This walk is not going anywhere.
  2. Drop the lead slack until it isn't really a lead, just a cord between you.
  3. Let your dog choose. Where to stop, what to sniff, how long to stay.
  4. Twenty minutes. No corrections, no "let's go", no hurrying it along.
  5. End when your dog seems softer. They will, and so will you.

That is the ritual, free and complete. The planner puts it on one printable page with a week of walks around it, so it lives on the fridge instead of in a saved post you never find again.

A sniffing walk is thinking, and thinking is what actually settles a dog. Twenty unhurried minutes where the nose leads does more than an hour of fetch, because your dog comes home worked out rather than wound up.

And it works on both ends of the lead. Your dog reads your pace before it reads your words, so a slower walk is a quieter you by the time you get home.

Maya walking with Charlie on the coast
Created by Maya Foxten

The walk that resets a louder day.

This is the practice I come back to when a day gets too full. Not a training drill and not a workout. Just twenty minutes of letting Charlie lead and letting the rest of it settle.

Dogs don't need us to be perfect. They need us to be present.
